The fruit

Fruttosa FigsFIGS (Ficus carica)
The fig tree originates in western Asia but has grown in the Mediterranean for time untold. Resistant to drought, this plant was considered ‘impure’ by the ancient Greeks whilst other civilizations referred to it as an oracle-tree. The Romans loved its fruit and their gladiators and circus performers favoured it for its energizing properties. Still today, in North Africa, figs are the symbol of fertility and the most precious ceremonial offering to the spirits of the dead.
Nutritionally, figs are exceptionally high in vitamins, mineral salts and fibre. The seed-rich pulp is sweet and tasty.
Herbal medicines use figs to purify, its mucilaginous content making it mildly laxative.

The recipe
Mediterranean figs and apple sugar.
